2012 In Review
by Ron Rego
2012 has had plenty of ups and downs in the sports world. The Olympics in London certainly had some great stories and provided us with some great moments. Whether it being Gabby Douglas and her winning of Gold in Gymnastics or Michael Phelps winning more medals making him the best Olympian ever. We saw LeBron James winning the NBA title and depending where you are from that could be an up or down. I choose down being a Celtic fan.
The NFL had its' share of downs as well with the deaths of Jerry Brown and Jovan Belcher. It also had the New Orleans Saints under a microscope for the bounty scandal. The regular season rapped up with many surprises as it saw Peyton Manning regain his MVP form leading the Broncos to the #1 seed.
The NHL hasn't even started a season and may not without a bargaining agreement. Not good for us hockey fans. This after a remarkable season with Jonathan Quick leading the Kings to a championship.
Sports deaths were a common this year. Besides the two NFLers from tragic situations, we lost former NFL great Alex Karras, former heavy weight champion Corrie Sanders from a robbery, NFL owner Art Model, Red Sox legend Johnny Peske, future NFL Hall-of-Famer Junior Seau, the great Met catcher Gary Carter, Canadian skier Sarah Burke and many more.
We now turn a page and start 2013 and hope we see many more great moments in all sports. Who will be the next one? Can RGIII become a legend in his first season in the NFL? Or will Peyton Manning make the most incredible comeback year ever in the NFL? How will the NHL fix the mess they are in, or will they? We wait, we watch, we cheer and we cry. Sports will always be part of our lives.
